Toffees stopper could go home.
Everton defender Johnny Heitinga has admitted that a return to the Netherlands could be on the cards as uncertainty continues to grow around his future on Merseyside, Sky Sports reports.
The 29-year-old made 30 appearances for the club last season but came in for criticism at times and it is now unsure as the whether he will figure in the plans of new manager Roberto Martinez.
The Dutch international has spoke out several times about his future and has contradicted himself in recent times, but as he heads into the final year of his deal he has been forced to admit that he will most likely be moving on with a return to his native country a distinct possibility.
“I’ve had my worst season since I joined,” he said.
“I don’t want to extend my contract because it would mean they’d be my final club outside Holland.
“I have played in Spain and England, so maybe it’s time for somewhere else.”
Heitinga began his career with Ajax, breaking into the squad in 2001 after graduating from their world famous youth academy. He went on to spend the next seven years with the Amsterdam giants before moving onto Atletico Madrid for a solitary season in 2008.
