Everton are targeting a £6million swoop for highly-rated Sevilla midfielder Gary Medel, according to the Mirror.

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez is looking to bolster his midfield options, and has identified Medel as a must-sign target to play a deep-lying role in the midfield. Earning rave-reviews for his performances against Barcelona, in-particular Lionel Messi, and the 26-year old Chilean has emerged as a top target.

Sevilla are willing to sell their star players this summer to fix their financial situation, exemplified by the sales of arguably their two most vital players, winger Jesus Navas and striker Alvaro Negredo, and now midfielder Medel could join the list of Spain-based players to come to the Premier League in recent years. The Toffee’s are believed to be close to agreeing a fee for the player, in the region of £6million.

His potential arrival could spell the end of Marouane Fellaini’s tenure at the club, with both Manchester United and Arsenal keen on signing the £22million-rated Belgian international. Martinez has also identified James McCarthy from former club Wigan as a potential addition, but the £15million release clause is deemed excessive. He has also made enquiries into signing West Ham enforcer Mohamed Diame.

Medel would join Arouna Kone, Antolin Alcaraz and Gerard Deulofeu as new arrivals at the club this summer, as Martinez begins his squad revamp ahead of the new season, where the club has high hopes and aspirations of a top four finish, resulting in Champions League qualification.
