‘Keeper compares motormouth midfielder to Forrest Gump.
Former Everton goalkeeper Neville Southall has urged Roberto Martinez to avoid troublesome QPR midfielder Joey Barton at all costs, talkSPORT reports.
Earlier this week Barton’s agent, Willie McKay confirmed that the player would be interested in a move to his boyhood club after a proposed deal to rejoin Marseille now seems to be dead in the water and he sees no future at Loftus Road.
However, Goodison Park hero Southall believes that a move for the one-cap England man would be a huge mistake and he has pleaded with new boss Roberto Martinez to leave the speculation as it is and not go ahead with any sort of move.
“I think they have already got a kitman,” said Southall, when asked on Hawksbee & Jacobs whether he thought the 30-year-old would be a good signing.
“What is he going to add to Everton? He might be a half decent player at times but, if he was that good, Harry Redknapp would be begging him to stay at QPR.
“I don’t see how he will fit into Everton’s style of play. He ain’t the best passer in the world. Yes, he is fit and runs up and down all day but Forrest Gump did that as well, didn’t he?
“I would rather he [Martinez] got in a young lad, who is probably on less money and a better prospect in the long run so they have got until January to bed him in and see what he is like. A 30-year-old at Everton? I was hoping they were past that, unless he was a current international.”
