Everton have approached Dutch champions Ajax over the availability of Belgian international Toby Alderweireld, but face strong competition from clubs around Europe who desperately wish to bring in the highly rated defender according to the Daily Express.

It is believed his Dutch employers only value him at £5million, but he has already snubbed a move to the Premier League as Norwich set up talks with the 24 year-old. There is other interest from the Premier League as the Toffee’s fierce rivals Liverpool have shown a clear interest in finding a replacement for Napoli-bound Martin Skrtel.

Despite the clear Premier League interest, the Belgian has yet to make a decision claims his agent, Soren Lerby.

“It is true that Everton came forward for Alderweireld,” Lerby told reporters.

“Though there are other concrete directions, Toby must now look at which team he finds the most challenging.”

Toby has managed to acquire 24 caps for Belgium, since making his debut back in 2009 when he played at right back for his country. He is capable of playing there, but his preferred position [where he plays for his current club Ajax too] is at centre back.

A huge convincing factor of how the defender will fare is his previous performances in Europe. The Belgian impressed years ago with Jan Vertonghen, prior to his move to Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur. He has impressed once again in the Champions League but this time with his new partner, Niklas Moisander, who arrived at Ajax last summer.
