Tottenham Hotspur face competition from Italian giants AC Milan in the race to land coveted Steaua Bucuresti defender Vlad Chiriches, according to reports on talkSPORT.co.uk.
The north London club have been on the look-out for a new centre back of late after suffering an injury crisis at the back at White Hart Lane during preseason.
Tottenham head coach Andre Villas-Boas is already without the services of first-choice central defenders Jan Vertonghen and Younes Kaboul through injury, with neither player set to be fit for the start of the new Premier League season.
And with the club having also just allowed centre-back Steven Caulker to join newly promoted Cardiff City, the Portuguese is desperate to bring in a new defender before the summer transfer window closes for the year on Sept 2.
However, Spurs’ hopes of landing highly rated Romania international Chiriches, who has scored four goals in his 57 appearances for Steaua in the past two seasons, have taken a hit after it emerged that the 23-year-old was keen on a move to San Siro rather than the English capital this summer.
“The player wants to go to a big club and Italy attracts him,” confirmed the player’s agent, Ioan Becali, to Tuttosport.
Chiriches has a contract in the Romanian capital that runs until 2015 and is valued by his club at £8 million.
