Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of signing highly rated  Steaua Bucharest defender Vlad Chiriches this summer, according to reports in the Daily Mail.

The north London club are currently in the midst of a massive spending spree as they prepare for the imminent world-record departure of playmaker Gareth Bale to Spanish giants Real Madrid, with the Wales international expected to finally complete his £86 million move to the Santiago Bernabeu by the weekend.

And Tottenham are planning on spending all of the proceeds from Bale’s departure from White Hart Lane this season in order to bring in a number of new recruits to the capital, with the club having already tied up deals for the likes of Roberto Soldado (£26m), Paulinho (£17m) Etienne Capoue (£9m) and Nacer Chadli (£7m).

However, Spurs head coach Andre Villas-Boas has not stopped there, with the Portuguese now expected to sign promising Steaua centre-back Chiriches, after the 23-year-old was spotted in Heathrow airport on Wednesday.

The Romania international, who has a contract in Bucharest that runs until June 2018, is expected to cost Spurs no more than £6m, with Chiriches set to provide competition at the back for current first-choice central defenders Jan Vertonghen and skipper Michael Dawson at White Hart Lane this season.
