Check in to Manchester City vs Everton

Everton midfielder Ross Barkley has said that he plans to follow the advice given to him by Steven Gerrard to ‘ignore any of the big hitters’ that may put in an offer for his services, Sky Sports reports.

The talented 19-year-old has become one of the hottest prospects in English football at the moment having worked on his game to become a regular for Everton this term as well as making his way into the England national team.

Barkley, a product of the Goodison Park academy system, has benefited from loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United and a helping hand from Toffees bosses David Moyes and Roberto Martinez.

His emergence on the scene this season has earned him recognition from England coach Roy Hodgson, but he has insisted that all of the attention has not gone to his head.

And Barkley is keen to follow in the footsteps of Merseyside legend Steven Gerrard by staying put at his hometown club and rejecting all advances that might come his way.

“He told me I’m from Liverpool, a local lad playing for the team I support, and there is nothing better,” he said of Gerrard’s advice.

“He’s done that throughout his career. He said playing is the main thing, going to another team and not playing would be no good for my development.

“I was a bit star-struck when I first joined up but Steven was good to me when I was away. I sat next to him on the coach and he gave me loads of advice.

“He said the big hitters are going to be looking at me but the main thing for me is to stay with the club I’m at, the team I support and love, which is Everton.”

Barkley made his international debut in the side that beat Moldova 4-0 earlier this month, and though he has admitted that his domestic form is his priority he has allowed himself to dream of a place in the World Cup squad next summer.

“I’ve set my sights on the World Cup,” he added.

“It’s a goal for me to get myself in the World Cup squad. It’ll be hard but through hard work hopefully I can get on the flight there.”
