New Tottenham Hotspur head coach Tim Sherwood wants to make West Bromwich Albion front man Shane Long his first signing since being confirmed in his role at White Hart Lane, according to reports in the Sun.

Sherwood has been told by Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy that he will need to sell first though before he can bring any new recruits to the north London club.

And with striker Jermain Defoe set to move to Major League Soccer outfit Toronto FC for a fee of £6m and full-back Kyle Naughton also said to be available to buy for just £4m, Sherwood is expected to have only £10m available to spend on new players in the January transfer window.

However, with Republic of Ireland international Long’s current contract at the Hawthorns only running until June 30 2014, the Baggies are understood to be happy to offload Long this month for as little as £2m, rather than risk losing the player for nothing at the end of this campaign.

And Sherwood is said to view Long as being an ideal back-up forward to first-choice attackers Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor, with the 26-year-old also capable of playing off either of those two marksmen in a classic little-and-large strike partnership.
