Lost to Germany in the semi-finals
Arguably the most heartbreaking of all England’s shoot-out defeats, the Three Lions were a few successful kicks away from reaching the final on home soil.
England confidently slotted their first five spot-kicks with consummate ease, but unfortunately, Germany did as well. When sudden death arrived, centre-half Gareth Southgate hit a tame effort straight at the keeper, and Germany scored the next one to win the game.
