Hammers boss Sam Allardyce was ordered to spruce up his squad ahead of the new season after his side just narrowly avoided relegation in the 2013/14 campaign.
One of the main complaints about the club’s form has been the lack of excitement on the pitch, and Allardyce has been handed £20m in order to correct that and make some strong additions to the side.
Zarate underwent a medical yesterday and will put pen-to-paper on a permanent switch from Argentinian side Velez Sarsfield.
The 27-year-old finished the Argentinian season as the league’s top scorer with 19 goals, having resurrected his career following unsuccessful stints at Inter Milan and Lazio.
And Zarate could be quickly followed to Upton Park by Sunderland midfielder Jack Colback.
The Black Cats star, 24, is out of contract at the Stadium of Light and has rejected fresh terms to extend his stay after playing a pivotal role in the club’s escape from relegation.
