The centre-back was released by the Red Devils this summer after they rejected the chance to offer him a one-year extension, and despite initial rumours that he was set to quit football altogether he has instead begun his search to find a new club.

Newly promoted QPR have been linked with the 35-year-old following their play-off final victory over Derby on Saturday, but it appears Spurs are currently leading the chase.

However, there is also some significant interest in his services from overseas, with Turkish giants Galatasaray said to be keen, and MLS outfit LA Galaxy are thought to be interested in bringing him to the United States.

Spurs are believed to be in the hunt for some fresh defensive options as Belgian international Jan Vertonghen is still undecided over where his future lies after a disappointing season both personally and for the club.

Fellow stopper Younes Kaboul also has question marks hanging over his future and could move on before the new campaign kicks off in August.
