Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has revealed that his side will not be pursuing a move for Tottenham Hotspur winger Erik Lamela this summer, but that they may be interested in his team-mate Sandro, according to the London Evening Standard.
Former Roma man Lamela has struggled badly to adapt to the English game since making his eagerly anticipated £30m move to Tottenham last summer, and has been targeted by a number of Serie A clubs since then as it has emerged that he may be keen to move back to Italy.
However, while De Laurentiis admits that the Argentine wide-man was a target of his in the past, he is no longer a player he or manager Rafael Benitez are looking to buy this year.
“Rumours about our interest in him (Lamela) are only agent’s games,” he said. “I wanted him a year ago but they didn’t allow the deal.
“Now, with Benitez, we don’t need Lamela any more.”
Napoli could still come calling for one of Spurs’ midfielders though, as the club’s president did not rule out a possible bid for Brazilian ace Sandro, who is also being widely tipped to leave White Hart Lane in this transfer window.
The 25-year-old has been with the north London club since 2010, but is seemingly unhappy now after struggling for fitness and form in 2013/14 before finding himself axed from the first-team squad by Tim Sherwood.
“Sandro? He’s one of our targets, but not the only one,” De Laurentiis added.
