New Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is seemingly a man on a mission and that mission appears to be the wholesale re-jigging of his White Hart Lane defence.

Fox Sports reports that the Argentine manager is hoping to sell as many as five defenders before the summer transfer window slams shut.

Last season the north London side conceded 51 goals, more than any other side in the top eight, and conceded four or more goals on no less than five occasions, and things might have been much worse but for the displays of French custodian Hugo Lloris.

Indeed Pochettino has already moved to bring in Swansea City keeper Michel Vorm to act as a strong back-up to Lloris as well as signing Welsh left-back Ben Davies.

Those on the way out include centre-backs Vlad Chiriches, Michael Dawson, Younes Kaboul and full-backs Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Kyle Naughton.

Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen is rightly safe from any such threat and is by some distance Tottenham’s best central defensive option.
