Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on the signing of Sevilla captain Federico Fazio for a fee of £8m as the defender flies into London to complete the move, according to AS.
The Argentine was one of La Liga’s most in-form defensive players last season, and has now emerged as Spurs’ top target ahead of Villarreal centre-back Mateo Musacchio, whose move to White Hart Lane has seemingly been complicated by third party ownership issues.
Fazio now looks set to become Tottenham’s latest summer signing, with most of Mauricio Pochettino’s imports so far coming in defence, with young centre-back Eric Dier joining alongside Welsh left-back Ben Davies.
Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin reportedly remains a target for the north London outfit, but it now looks like Fazio will be the club’s next signing as Pochettino prioritises improvements at the back.
Spurs leaked goals last season, particularly in the big games, and their new manager will be hoping that a strong backline will prove to be the basis of a more successful side as they finally look to break into the Premier League’s top four this season.
Fazio, 27, looks a good and experienced addition, with the player having been a regular for Sevilla since 2007.
