Arsenal could be set to join Manchester United and a host of other top clubs in the chase for £16m-rated Inter Milan midfielder Fredy Guarin as an alternative to Real Madrid star Sami Khedira.
The Gunners were dealt the blow yesterday of Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti confirming that Khedira would be staying at the Bernabeu this summer, despite months of speculation that he was pushing for a move away from the Spanish giants.
The German international was said to have rejected numerous offers of a new contract from Real, but has seemingly now made a u-turn on his future and will leave Arsene Wenger to ponder other options to come in and strengthen his midfield.
Sporting Lisbon starlet William Carvalho and Wolfsburg midfielder Luiz Gustavo are two other of Wenger’s top targets in that position, but it could also be that Guarin will become a priority due to his lower transfer value of around £16m.
The Colombian international has attracted plenty of interest from top clubs this summer, including Manchester United, Juventus and Barcelona, and it seems as though Inter are willing to sell him for the right price due to his own desire to leave the San Siro, with £16m being their valuation of the player.
With Carvalho likely to cost around £30m or more, andf Gustavo valued at roughly £20m, Guarin could be a good alternative in the middle of the park, with the former Porto star able to play either as a defensive midfielder or box-to-box player.
The 28-year-old has been one of the top performers in Serie A in recent years and his work-rate and ability on the ball could make him an ideal signing for Arsenal as they eye a replacement for the injured Mikel Arteta to protect their back four.
United may be prioritising a deal for Juventus star Arturo Vidal after also considering Guarin, and Arsenal will now hope to swoop to sign him ahead of their rivals.
