Wenger is wary that his numbers in defence have been dropping like flies recently, with Mathieu Debuchy being ruled out for three months with an ankle problem and recent reports that both Nacho Monreal and Calum Chambers have picked up injuries that could keep them out for an unconfirmed amount of time.

And now CaughtOffside understands that Wenger has sounded the former Northern Ireland international out about a pay-as-you-play deal to help shore up the Gunners back line until the new year.

Released by West Ham at the end of last season, the former Northern Irish international defender is still without a club.

The 33-year-old is an experienced Premier League campaigner and would have no problem slotting into the club’s last line, having made over 20 appearances for West Ham last term.

Having spent the majority of his career with the Hammers and Sunderland, his only other time spent with a club came in the form of two loan spells with Leeds United between 2010-11.
