Reports in the Daily Mirror suggest that England boss Roy Hodgson is set to demote both players. It means United’s £27m man will go from being part of the Three Lions’ World Cup squad this past summer to not being involved for next week’s Euro 2016 qualifiers.
Hodgson, whose team face San Marino and Estonia, wants youth team manager Gareth Southgate to name a strong team for their tough two-leg European Championship qualifying play-off against Croatia, and is prepared to sacrifice several potential senior players.
The source adds that Southgate is happy he can call on his best age-qualified players as Hodgson is desperate for them to qualify for next summer’s finals.
This means that Chambers is also likely to drop down from the first-team, while West Brom’s hot-shot striker Saido Berahino will also remain with the former Middlesbrough boss.
