The Reds are in the market for new attacking players after losing star player Luis Suarez to Barcelona in the summer, and Higuain is among their top targets after they reportedly failed in their efforts to sign him before the start of the season.
It is claimed that Liverpool were ready to offer £22m plus midfielder Lucas Leiva as part of the deal, though they failed to land the Argentine and instead signed Mario Balotelli from AC Milan to help fill the void of Suarez upfront.
However, the Italian international has not got off to a good start at Anfield, with Brendan Rodgers seemingly concerned about his form and looking for alternatives in that position.
Higuain could be a good choice for the club, and the 26-year-old has been strongly linked with Arsenal in the past before he opted instead to make the move to Italy.
Still, it is now thought that the former Real Madrid man is ready to leave the Stadio San Paolo, and Liverpool could be his next destination.
