Reds move closer to deal for right back Martin Montoya.

Liverpool, along with their Premier League rivals Arsenal, have been handed a timely boost in the transfer market with the news that the agent of Barcelona right back Martin Montoya has confirmed that his client is set to leave the Nou Camp in January in search of first team football, according to reports from the Daily Star.

Montoya has been heavily linked with both Premier League giants, as well as clubs in Italy, in recent days after news broke that he was keen to leave the Catalan giants in search of action after failing to dislodge Brazilian duo Dani Alves and Douglas from the first choice right back position at the Nou Camp.

It had been reported yesterday that Barcelona would be reluctant to allow a player who they have under contract until 2018 to depart the club in January – but comments from the player’s agent now seem to contradict that stance:

“Luis Enrique has told him that he will find it difficult to dislodge Dani Alves and Douglas. Within the system, there’s just no place for him; he had thought that he might win the right-back slot from Dani Alves.”

Both the Gunners and the Reds are looking at Montoya as they look to strengthen the right back area, with Liverpool braced to lose England right back Glen Johnson on a free transfer at the end of the season and Arsenal having suffered when experienced Frenchman Mathieu Debuchy got injured earlier in the season.
