The French centre-back has not managed to establish himself as a regular at Stamford Bridge this season, though he could benefit from a spell away from the club to gain some more first-team experience.

Rated as one of the most promising young defenders in Europe prior to his move to Chelsea from Saint-Etienne, Zouma needs to ensure he is playing regularly, and Mourinho seems ready to let him leave on a temporary basis.

Still, this could leave the Blues short of backup options in the centre of defence, with John Terry and Gary Cahill the only other options in that position at the moment.

The 20-year-old cost £12.5m to sign last January, and was then loaned back to Saint-Etienne straight away, as he is very much viewed as a player for the future at Chelsea.
