Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has slammed referee Anthony Taylor, after telling the official that he should feel ‘ashamed of himself’ for his failure to award Cesc Fabregas a second-half penalty.

The Premier League leaders were held to a 1-1 draw by Southampton, but they might have won the game had Fabregas earned the spot kick he deserved following Matt Targett’s clumsy challenge just inside the area.

Instead, the Spaniard was booked for simulation, adding to the recent incidents involving Gary Cahill and Branislav Ivanovic – who have both been criticised for diving in recent weeks.

Speaking about the incident, Mourinho said: “The referee made a huge mistake that decided the game. I had the chance to see it on the TV by the tunnel, and I was shocked.

“From a distance it looked a penalty, but the screen is the screen and the referee was in the screen [picture]. He is there, he is ten metres away so, for me, it is difficult to understand.

“Referees are being put under pressure [to book players] and I’m not sure if the FA and Premier League should do something about that. Other managers speak about diving and this and that, and I’m not sure if they do anything about that because clearly there is huge pressure on the referees.

“A bad referee decision has decided the result of the match. I’m not saying my player would have scored but, if we had gone 2-1 up, the game would have had to change because they [Southampton] would have had to change the way they played.”

Eden Hazard cancelled out Sadio Mane’s opening goal, while Manchester City’s draw with Burnley kept the Stamford Bridge side three points clear at the top of the table.
