The Spaniard has missed most of the season so far through injury and is now unlikely to feature again until late April after going under the knife.

Arsenal have explained the extent of the injury, with an inflammation causing Arteta a great deal of discomfort in recent months as he prepares for a lengthy period of rehabilitation.

Arsene Wenger is pleased with how the 32-year-old’s surgery has gone, but this will be another blow in what has been a season of many injury problems for the north London club.

Jack Wilshere is also out at the moment, along with another midfielder in Aaron Ramsey. Meanwhile, German playmaker Mesut Ozil has only just returned to action after missing most of the campaign.

“Mikel has had surgery which went well. I have just seen him, he is back with us at the training ground,” Wenger said.

“He had a limited mobility in his ankle and some persistent inflammation that had an impact on his calf. That meant we had to make the decision to have surgery and it’s a proper solution which gives him the best chance to recover.”
