Red Devils will have to pay “stupid” money for midfielder.

Manchester United have been told they will have to pay “stupid” money to persuade AS Roma to sell Kevin Strootman anytime soon, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The Italian giants are thought to be holding out for around £77m for the Netherlands international, who only joined the club in a £15m deal from PSV Eindhoven last season.

Strootman has impressed greatly in Serie A, and Louis van Gaal is known to be a big fan of his after working with him in the Dutch national team setup, prior to taking over at United.

Still, it will prove expensive for the Red Devils if they do want to bring the 24-year-old to Old Trafford, as AS Roma are only ready to negotiate a huge fee for the player who remains firmly part of their plans.

Roma president James Pallotta is quoted as saying: “We want to put the best team on the pitch, that’s the most important thing.

“But we’re businessmen. If someone comes in with a stupid number for a player, you have to listen to it. You can’t just say ‘no, no matter what’.

“My view is that I don’t want Kevin to go, for example, but if someone offers a huge amount, you at least have to listen to them. You’re running a team, so you have to look at what’s best for everyone, not just one individual. That’s the way the world works.”

United are also looking at two other Serie A stars – Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba, and Palermo striker Paulo Dybala.
