The Blues faithful of course backed their captain following the controversy with Anton Ferdinand – yet their behaviour only damaged the image of the club even more.
In their Champions League tie with Genk, the Chelsea fans repeatedly sang provocative chants aimed at the QPR defender – “Anton Ferdinand: you know what you are” – in an inappropriate attempt to back Terry.
This was a serious example of when a player shouldn’t be backed.
