The Dutch international is quoted by the Daily Express as stating that Louis van Gaal’s side will spend big in their push to strengthen this transfer window…

“United spent £200m on players last year and they are going to spend another £200m this summer so we will have a team that can compete for the title,” he began, before discussing his own future.

“It is my ambition to play as many games as possible (next season).

“I feel fitter than ever.”

Van Gaal successfully guided Man United to an all important top four finish and the carrot of Champions League action will certainly aid the Dutch manager’s pursuit of top talents.

Man United have already completed the £25m signing of winger Memphis Depay (via the Guardian) but there are other areas of the club’s squad that van Gaal would do well to address.

The club’s central defensive options were stretched in 2014/15 with senior stars Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans all suffering with periods of patchy form, while Argentine Marcos Rojo had to adapt to life in the Premier League.

Therefore van Gaal could be tempted to bring in a strong central defender with the likes of Mats Hummels (Via the Guardian) and Nicolas Otamendi (Via ESPN) frequently linked with a move to Man United.

With United unlikely to make Falcao’s loan move permanent (via Telegraph), and with van Persie’s own form being suspect, van Gaal could also do with bringing in a prolific forward to spearhead their front-line.

One striker consistently linked with a move to Man United is PSG’s Edinson Cavani (via the Daily Express) and the Uruguayan certainly possesses the physical attributes that could make him a feared finisher in the English top tier.

Finally, there is a real fear that keeper David De Gea could be on his way to Real Madrid (via the Independent) and should the Spaniard complete his move to the Bernabeu then van Gaal would have another area of concern to deal with…

Man United made real progress in 2014/15, with van Gaal steering the club into calmer waters following David Moyes’s horrendous brief reign in charge, and the addition of a couple of top quality signings could well help the English giants to push onwards and upwards.
