Arsenal have been linked with a move to sign highly-rated Everton midfielder James McCarthy in this summer’s transfer window after sending scouts to watch him play this season.
The Gunners are long-time admirers of the Republic of Ireland international, who also impressed Arsene Wenger at his previous club Wigan Athletic, though he ultimately ended up at Goodison Park.
McCarthy’s fine Premier League form has continued since his move to Merseyside, and he now looks like becoming a top target for Arsenal again this summer after the club missed out on Sami Khedira and could face a further blow in their pursuit of Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin.
According to the Irish Independent, McCarthy could now be the player Wenger has in mind to solve his side’s defensive midfield issues, with promising youngster Francis Coquelin in need of a more solid partner next season.
