The 23-year-old was on loan at West Ham last season and was a key part of Sam Allardyce’s team, making 36 appearances through the campaign. After this the Hammers are keen to take him on again and possibly convince the England international to eventually sign permanently.

However, the Black Cats are going to try and pip their rivals to the right-back by offering a £2 million fee for a one-year loan. This also won’t contain an option to buy, which will please the North London club as they want to keep the player in the long term.

Stadium of Light boss Bick Advocaat is keen on the youngster as he attempts to build on their heroics in the last campaign. The Dutchman was only appointed with nine games left in the season and the North East side stuck in the relegation zone. However, he guided them to safety, even beating fierce rivals Newcastle United along the way thanks to a Jermain Defoe wondergoal.
