Manchester United team news: Fit-again captain Wayne Rooney poised to return for clash against Southampton

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is set to welcome back captain Wayne Rooney for the Premier League clash against Southampton on Sunday afternoon.

News of the Red Devils skipper’s availability for the game at St Mary’s Stadium was revealed via the club’s official Twitter account on Friday morning as van Gaal addressed the media in his pre-match press conference.

The England international has been forced to miss the last two games against bitter rivals Liverpool and PSV Eindhoven with an hamstring injury, but his imminent return will certainly boost the club’s attacking options.

In Rooney’s absence Marouane Fellaini and £36million summer signing Anthony Martial have rotated the centre-forward role with contrasting results as United beat the Merseyside outfit 3-1 at Old Trafford with the Belgian target man in the team.

However, they crashed to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the defending Eredivisie champions in European action on Tuesday night when the French youngster was leading the line.

If Rooney is recalled to the starting XI against the Saints, then he will be hoping to pick up from where he left off for the Three Lions during the international break as he became the all-time leading goalscorer for the national team after netting against both San Marino and Switzerland.
