La Liga heavyweights set to rival Tottenham for midfield powerhouse

Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of signing Axel Witsel have been dealt a blow with the news that Atletico Madrid are keen on signing the box-to-box operator.

According to the Daily Mail [via Le 10 Sport], Diego Simeone has his eyes on the midfield powerhouse, who has also been tipped for a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Having been tipped for a move away from Zenit St. Petersburg during the summer [Standard], Witsel ultimately remained, where he has been a key figure in Andre Villas-Boas’s sublime selection.

However, the transfer rumours have started swirling once more, with Atletico understood to be the latest side to be keen on the midfielder.

It remains to be seen whether Spurs, who were heavily linked with a move for the player during the summer, would look to rival Atleti for the player’s signature, although they player has recently confirmed that he would prefer a switch to White Hart Lane than a transfer to AC Milan, another one of his potential suitors [Standard].

Since the offseason, Dele Alli has emerged as an excellent Premier League campaigner, while Mousa Dembele has improved his game dramatically this term.

With Ryan Mason, Eric Dier and Nabil Bentaleb are also fine options for Mauricio Pochettino in the heart of the park, and the Argentine coach may look to invest in other areas of his squad.
