Even one of the two greatest goal scorers of the 21st century is not exempt from the occasional gaffe, but what Cristiano Ronaldo did against Real Sociedad could go down as not only one of the worst misses in his storied career, but in the history of Real Madrid.
After being dragged down in the box for a blatant penalty, Ronaldo was set up with a penalty kick to give Los Blancos the first-half lead. But instead of converting the kick as he has for the overwhelming majority of his career, Ronaldo launched the ball into outer space:
Ronaldo isn’t the first penalty-kick wizard to miss wildly this year – Chelsea midfielder Eden Hazard had a similar miss in the Champions League against Maccabi Tel-Aviv. Hazard’s teammate Oscar missed a potential lead-changing penalty kick just last week in a draw against Watford.
The Real Madrid scoring machine is still the team’s leading scorer with 12 goals and four assists through the first half of the La Liga season.
