Manchester United deny rumoured hotel meeting with Pep Guardiola

Manchester United have denied suggestions that they arranged a meeting with Pep Guardiola in a Paris hotel.

Louis van Gaal’s contract at the club runs until the summer of 2017, but while the Dutch coach has overseen a fairly encouraging start to 2016, the struggles of his Red Devils team have become increasingly hard to overlook.

Not only were the north-west giants eliminated from the Champions League in the group stage, they have also slipped out of the top four in the Premier League and have wholly failed to cultivate a convincing, entertaining, attacking style of football.

Similarly, LVG’s big-money summer signings Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial have failed to truly ignite, and the pair are yet to convince either that they are an upgrade on the players who went before them, or that they can lead a title challenge.

According to France Football, United officials met with Guardiola at the Hotel Bristol in Paris, with BBC Sport interpreting their meeting as an attempt on behalf of the club to sound out the former Barcelona manager about the possibility of him replacing Louis van Gaal.

However, as noted by BBC Sport, the meeting never took place, with the club insisting that the reports are not true.

It’s easy to understand why Guardiola is emerging as one of the most sought-after managers in the world game, with the coach having won three La Liga titles, two Bundesliga titles, two Champions League crowns and two Club World Cups during his managerial career with Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
