Controversial Aston Villa captain calls relegation a ‘weight off our shoulders’

Self-awareness might very well be the krytonite of Aston Villa captain Joleon Lescott – either that or he just really dislikes being at Villa Park. In an interview following the Villans’ 1-0 loss to Man United and an official ticket to the Sky Bet Championship division, the controversial Villa star angered just about every remaining fan he has by calling relegation ‘a weight off our shoulders.’

Following the loss to Man United, Lescott told BBC, “Now it’s confirmed, maybe it’s a weight off the shoulders and we can give these fans what they deserve, some performances…”

“…We knew before the game what we had to do but coming to Old Trafford is never easy no matter what situation you’re in… Throughout the game we showed a level of pride that there’s probably not been enough of throughout the season.”

“It’s about results so regardless of how we played in patches today we are relegated. We need to find a way to get out of this run of defeats. Now it’s confirmed maybe it’s a weight off the shoulders and we can give these fans what they deserve, some performances.”

Aston Villa were officially assured of relegation after claiming just 16 points in 34 games – winning three games and drawing seven times while losing 24.

Earlier this season Lescott “accidentally” tweeted a picture of a new luxury car he bought following Villa’s brutal 6-0 loss to Liverpool.

The Villans have scored the fewest goals (23), allowed the most (65) while recording just seven clean sheets, and have the worst goal differential (-42). During the season they parted ways with two permanent managers, Tim Sherwood and later Remi Garde.
