Liverpool are understood to be close to signing off on the transfer of Loris Karius from Mainz.

According to The Guardian, the Reds are set to return to one of Jurgen Klopp’s former clubs to recruit the young goalkeeper, who will likely offer competition for current No. 1 Simon Mignolet.

The source report that the deal is worth approximately £4.7 million, with talks between the two parties understood to have progressed over the last few days.

The move taking Karius to Anfield could be completed within the coming days.

Should the Bundesliga stopper move to Merseyside, he will be the first step in Klopp’s anticipated summer rebuilding as they club look to move on from their midweek disappointment in Basel.

Despite taking a first-half lead against Sevilla through Daniel Sturridge’s opener, the Reds capitulated after the break, conceding three goals in quick succession as the Rojiblancos claimed their third consecutive Europa League title.

Karius, who has represented Germany from U-16 to U-21 level, could represent a positive addition for the Anfield giants.
