Chelsea lose ground in race for superb Serie A defender

John Terry may be coming back next season, but the Chelsea backfield still has gaping holes in it between injuries and age. New manager Antonio Conte is expected to fill those holes with some of his former Serie A friends and foes, but one of his top defensive targets could slip through his fingers this summer.

According to the Express, Chelsea have fallen behind Serie A giants Roma in the race for Torino right back Bruno Peres. The 26-year-old Brazilian is coming off another strong season for Torino, and is believed to be available for £15.5 million. But Roma have already begun negotiations with their Serie A rivals for his services.

Per the source, Torino are in no big hurry to sell Peres since he still has four years left on his contract. However, for the right offer, the club could be tempted to let him go.

This past year Peres scored three times in 31 appearances for the club, adding four assists as the club finished 12th.
