Jan Vertonghen has won his fitness battle and partners fellow Toby Alderweireld in the centre of the Tottenham defence.

Vertonghen injured his ankle ligaments at Euro 2016 and, despite not playing a minute of preseason, he has been judged the best partner for Alderweireld, who was named Tottenham Fans’ Player of the Year last season.

Everton hand debuts to goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, 19-year-old defender Mason Holgate and ex-Aston Villa midfielder Idrissa Gueye.

However, there is not Romelu Lukaku for Everton.

The official reason for his absence is a minor injury, but cynics will surely speculate that it could be related to recent transfer talk.

Both games between Spurs and Everton ended as draws last season.
