Tottenham’s Champions League status in jeopardy after Bayer Leverkusen defeat

Tottenham Hostpur’s Champions League status is in jeopardy after they fell to a 1-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen at Wembley.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have slipped down to third place in group E with Bayer Leverkusen leapfrogging them after their victory tonight. Spurs are now four points behind group leaders Monaco, and are in genuine danger of being eliminated from the competition.

The North London side never really got going at Wembley. They were punished for their lethargic performance by Kevin Kampl, who capitalised on a defensive mix-up and fired past Hugo Lloris.

Midfield maestro Mousa Dembele could miss their derby clash with Arsenal on Sunday after limping off 16 minutes into tonight’s game. Spurs dearly missed his influence in the middle of the park this evening and his absence would be a huge blow at the weekend.

Spurs’ next Champions League fixture is against Monaco away from home. It is looking very much like a must-win game if they are going to progress to the knock-out stages.
