Newcastle striker who scored nine goals last season targeted by Serie A giants Napoli

Italian side Napoli are preparing to make an £18 million move for Newcastle striker Aleksander Mitrovic, according to the Mirror.

The Mirror report that Napoli, who finished second in Serie A last season, are ready to hand the Magpies a £5 million return on the £13 million they paid for Mitrovic in the summer of 2015.

Mitrovic scored nine goals for Newcastle last term, but was unable to prevent them being relegated to the Championship. Under the stewardship of Rafa Benitez, they are well on their way to be promoted back to the Premier League. They sit three points clear at the top of England’s second tier after seven wins on the bounce.

The Serbian international has found his route to the starting eleven blocked by the electric form of Dwight Gayle, who has scored 11 goals in 13 appearances so far this campaign. Mitrovic missed the opening four games of the season through suspension and has only been used sporadically since. Napoli could be an attractive option for him in his search for regular first-team football.
