Rafa Benitez determined to keep hold of Newcastle striker who has scored six goals in his last five games

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez will not sell striker Aleksander Mitrovic in the January transfer window despite interest from Napoli, report The Northern Echo.

The Northern Echo believes that Napoli are long-term admirers of Mitrovic and there have been suggestions that they are readying a £14 million bid. Benitez is reluctant to sell any of his key players in January, however. This also includes captain Jamaal Lascelles who has been linked with a big-money move to Chelsea.

Mitrovic’s start to the season was disrupted by injury. He returned to full fitness to find his route into the starting eleven blocked by the prolific Dwight Gayle. He has found his best form in recent games for both Newcastle and Serbia, having scored six goals in his last five appearances for club and country.

Newcastle sit top of the Championship and have won all of their last seven league games. Benitez appears reluctant to sell any of their star players and thus put their promotion bid in jeopardy.
