It took Virgil Van Dijk a month or so to break into the Southampton side, but since making his first appearance he has barely looked back. If anything he has got better, and its no surprise that now, 18 months on, half the league is chasing his signature.
The Daily Mirror claim that the defender has a £25m release clause in his contract, which would make the Dutchman the bargain of the century if it’s true. While the Mirror name Everton, Manchester City and Manchester United as his chief suitors, any club who needs a centre back would be crazy to not do everything they can to recruit him at that price.
If the clause does indeed exist – and there is no evidence that it does at this stage beyond these unsubstantiated rumours – it wouldn’t be surprising to see several clubs meet it and leave it to the player to decide where he wants to move to. Whatever the outcome, Southampton will be cursing themselves for not backing their scouts and offering their star defender more money in return for a higher buyout clause.
