Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen is reportedly unsure of his future at Stamford Bridge, as it all depends on transfer business elsewhere.
The 20-year-old is currently out on loan with Borussia Monchengladbach after seeking regular first-team football. Having had his wish granted, it’s claimed that the Bundesliga outfit want him on a permanent basis.
According to The Mirror, the Danish youngster is ready to seal a switch to Germany but it’s reported that it all depends on whether or not Antonio Conte is able to sign his preferred defensive target.
The former Juventus boss is said to still be chasing Leonardo Bonucci, and so if a reported £60m bid for the Italian international is successful next year, then it will allow Christensen to leave west London on a permanent basis.
It’s added that Manchester City are also keen on Bonucci, but given their history and success both with Juve and the Azzurri, it would be a shock to see the commanding centre-half move to England and not join Conte at Stamford Bridge.
Meanwhile, if the report is true, it will be a disappointment for many Chelsea supporters who had probably wanted to see Christensen get an opportunity after impressing for Gladbach.
It doesn’t say much for a youth policy and lowering the average age of the squad by spending such a significant amount on a 29-year-old and so there is a strong argument in that sense.
However, Conte will be chasing immediate success at Chelsea and not looking too far ahead. With his side storming away at the top of the Premier League his methods seem to be working pretty well and so the club hierarchy will undoubtedly be open to backing his plans in the transfer market whatever they might be.
