Liverpool on red alert as Barcelona target most influential figure at Anfield

It’s a rumour that isn’t likely to go away anytime soon as Barcelona are reportedly looking at appointing Jurgen Klopp as their next coach.

Problems at the Nou Camp have been ongoing this season, but their 4-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League this week has intensified speculation that Luis Enrique could be replaced.

According to The Mirror, Klopp finds himself on the Catalan giants’ wanted list, although in fairness, it’s claimed that there are a fair few names on that list including Everton boss Ronald Koeman.

It isn’t the first time, and certainly won’t be the last, that the German tactician is linked with the job though, that is until Barca make an announcement on whether or not Enrique is staying and until they confirm a successor.

From a Liverpool perspective, they’ll be desperate to avoid losing their influential boss, who signed a six-year contract recently and is seen as the ideal manager to lead the club back to former glories.

Their season has come unstuck over January and early February having crashed out of both cup competitions and lost their footing in the race for the top four, but there are still few who doubt Klopp’s ability to build something special at Anfield over time.

It’s added in the report that Koeman will be the favourite if Barca continue down the road of appointing former playing heroes, but they will undoubtedly be scouring the market looking for the best man for the job as they look set to be left empty-handed when it comes to the major trophies this season.

Enrique has done an excellent job since taking up the role, but speculation about troubles with the squad along with results on the pitch have ultimately left him in the firing line and with his contract set to end this summer, there will likely be a new man at the helm at the start of next season.

Liverpool fans will undoubtedly just be hoping that it isn’t Klopp sitting in the home dugout at the Nou Camp…
