AC Milan already in talks over long-term Montella successor, ideal coach lined up

AC Milan made the decision to sack Vincenzo Montella on Monday, with club legend Gennaro Gattuso appointed in his place for the rest of the season.

The Rossoneri sit in seventh place in the Serie A table, 11 points adrift of the top four as they look to qualify for the Champions League.

In turn, with a lack of progression in their performances under Montella, it was seemingly the right decision for the Italian giants, who will hope that Gattuso can at least fire the players up and lead them to improved results both in Serie A and in the Europa League.

However, given his lack of experience in a top job with just a 31.4 winning percentage from previous stints in charge of Sion, Palermo, OFI Crete and Pisa, there are real doubts over the 39-year-old being the long-term solution.

According to Calciomercato, Milan’s intention is to appoint a top manager, and their primary target remains Chelsea boss Antonio Conte, with whom they began talks with via his representatives earlier this month and have made it clear that he remains their first choice.

Aside from a successful spell with Juventus, the Italian tactician also won the Premier League title in his first season in charge at Stamford Bridge, and so his credentials would certainly match the ambition that Milan have to get back to the top.

The report paints a mixed picture as while Conte is said to be happy with Chelsea, he has had troubles this season. In turn, it remains to be seen whether or not he can be prised away for a job back in Serie A.

As for Milan, they invested heavily in the summer to rebuild their squad, and this will certainly be a major setback in their plans as with any managerial change comes a desire to stamp a new mark on the team. In turn, there could be more changes to come and so the pressure is on for them to get results in the meantime.
