Chelsea in talks over surprise striker signing to kick-start January transfer window

Chelsea have reportedly made a surprise enquiry over signing West Ham striker Andy Carroll on loan as they seem to kick-start their January transfer window plans.

Carroll is among two main targets for the Blues at the moment, along with £15million-rated Everton midfielder Ross Barkley, according to the Daily Mail.

Antonio Conte could do with more depth to his squad as his side seem to struggle with the extra demands of Champions League football this season.

Chelsea are already well behind Manchester City in the race to retain their Premier League crown, with Conte not able to work his magic in the same way as last term.

Still, some will question if the addition of a player like Carroll is really the answer, even if he is only a temporary signing and only intended to be used as cover.

The England international flopped badly at Liverpool, seeming unable to cope with the demands of playing for a truly big club.

Even at West Ham, Carroll’s goal record is pretty poor, though he has also struggled to play as often as he would have liked due to repeated injury problems.

The 28-year-old only has 32 goals in 123 games for the Hammers, and hasn’t once hit double figures for the club.
