Liverpool suffer major injury blow on eve of Man City clash with key absence

Liverpool will be without defender Virgil van Dijk for the clash against Manchester City on Sunday, according to reports.

The Dutchman had a debut to remember after scoring the winning goal against Everton in the FA Cup earlier this month, and he would have hoped to make his first Premier League appearance for the Reds on Sunday.

However, as per the Liverpool Echo, it looks as though he will miss out at Anfield due to a hamstring problem, in what will be a really disappointing blow for Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool are looking to extend a 17-game unbeaten run in all competitions, while hosting the Premier League leaders would have been difficult enough with Van Dijk in the starting line-up.

Now that he’s ruled out, it makes the task even tougher, and so it remains to be seen if they’re able to continue their impressive form and deal a blow to Pep Guardiola’s side who are still unbeaten in the league after 22 games.

Van Dijk was signed by Liverpool in a £75m deal from Southampton, as per BBC Sport, and they’ll certainly miss his commanding presence, defensive solidity and physicality at the back as they look to shut out City and give themselves the best possible chance of securing all three points.
