Chelsea prepared to take huge transfer gamble with just one week to go until deadline day

Chelsea are reportedly ready to hang on to Thibaut Courtois and risk losing him on a free transfer next summer depending on how the next few days pan out.

The Blues are in a difficult situation as there is just a week left until this summer’s transfer deadline for Premier League clubs.

Urgently in need of a new goalkeeper if they are to allow Courtois his desired move to Real Madrid, Chelsea are interested in Kasper Schmeichel and Jordan Pickford, according to the Daily Mail.

However, if they cannot bring in any of their targets, CFC are prepared to simply block Courtois’ exit for the time being in a move that would more or less confirm they’ll end up losing him for nothing in a year’s time.

Chelsea have just a week to replace Thibaut Courtois

The Belgium international has just a year to run on his contract, and as noted by the Mail, he wants out of Stamford Bridge for a move to Madrid.

While this is far from ideal for Chelsea, some fans may feel it wouldn’t be so bad having Courtois as an option for another year, giving them more time to prepare to sign a top class replacement.

At the same time, however, they could probably also do with that extra cash Courtois would bring if they are to be able to afford not just a new ‘keeper, but to also strengthen other areas of their squad that looked so unconvincing as they slumped to a disappointing fifth place finish last season.
