Liverpool are keeping a close eye on Club Tijuana midfielder Gilberto Mora, with the teenager’s rapid rise for club and country turning him into one of the most closely watched young players in world football.
The 17-year-old enhanced his reputation during Mexico’s home World Cup this summer and has carried that momentum into the new Liga MX campaign.
For Liverpool, this looks more like a long-term recruitment opportunity than an immediate January deal, particularly with competition already building across Europe.
Liverpool among clubs chasing Mora
According to Football Insider, Liverpool have followed Mora since his breakthrough at Tijuana and remain firmly interested in signing him.
Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are also monitoring the attacking midfielder, making any eventual deal highly competitive.
Tijuana are reportedly prepared to consider a sale at the end of the season, when they believe Mora’s value could be at its highest.
He strengthened their negotiating position by signing a new three-year contract shortly before the World Cup and has started the current Liga MX campaign with five goals and one assist in seven appearances.
His reputation is not based solely on club form. FIFA highlighted Mora as one of Mexico’s standout young talents before the tournament, praising his creativity between the lines, close control, passing and ability to receive under pressure.
He became the sixth-youngest player in World Cup history when he appeared at the 2026 tournament aged 17 years and 240 days.
Reds should be patient rather than force a January deal
Mora fits Liverpool’s recruitment model extremely well.
He is technically gifted, already experienced internationally and young enough to develop without immediately needing to become a regular starter. His preferred role as an attacking midfielder could eventually give Liverpool another creative option between midfield and the forward line.
Timing, however, is important. Mora does not turn 18 until October 14, and international-transfer regulations around minors make a summer move far more straightforward than attempting anything prematurely.
Liverpool also have no reason to rush simply because Madrid, Barcelona and PSG are involved. A clear development plan and realistic pathway to first-team football may ultimately matter as much as transfer fee or reputation.
Five goals in seven games is an excellent start, but Mora is still only 17. Liverpool’s smartest move would be to keep building their relationship with his representatives while assessing how he develops over a full season.
If his current trajectory continues, the problem next summer may not be deciding whether he is good enough. It will be convincing him that Anfield is the best destination among several elite options.
