Where next for Liverpool defender? Newcastle? Aston Villa?
by Jon on May 30th, 2008Poor John Arne Riise. The Ginger One seems to be getting the silent treatment from Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez.
“I have to get [my future] sorted out before pre-season starts,” the Norwegian left-back told reporters this week, still not in the clear about his Anfield future.
“I can’t wait and wait for an answer. I have to get an answer now!”
Given the speculation in the press about Riise’s future, particularly following his disastrous own-goal against Chelsea in the Champions League semi-final, it’s understandable the 27-year-old wants a decision on his future at Liverpool.
Trouble is, he’s not likely to hear what he wants. It’s no secret his time at Anfield is up.
The evidence speaks for itself:
- he’s struggled to hold on to a regular place in Benitez’s starting line-up
- he’s cocked up with too many high-profile errors in the last eighteen months
- he can’t find his scoring boots
Plus Benitez has already lined up his successor in the shape of Udinese defender Andrea Dossena, who is expected to sign in days.
Newcastle are widely tipped to be interested in Riise’s services, but Benitez would no doubt prefer to use him in part-exchange with Aston Villa for Gareth Barry.
It’s not all doom and gloom though for John Arne Riise. He’s on his hols and seems pretty chilled by the whole affair:
“If we don’t get the answer we want, we’ll have to do something. We’re not sitting here and waiting and waiting,” he told Norwegian tabloid Verdens Gang
But after two seasons of utter dross, Caught Offside can’t help wonder: Is Riise still good enough for the Premiership?

Riise’s still good enough for the premierleague, but unfortunately not for Liverpool.
Thank you John Arne for the great moments you’ve given us and good luck with your future.

riise is good enough for both liverpool & premierleague. all he needs is encouragement. if he has to leave liverpool, let it be for the good of the club, like in exchange for barry with some cash from liverpool to villa.

I read something in the Norwegian press that put it about right. “He’s a good player. Not a great player.” Liverpool need someone great in that position.

Not good enough for the pool, who have you got who is better?
Seems all of the pools defenders are coming up on their sell by date, gonna have to revamp the whole crowd.

chuck, agger and skrtel are both 23, insua is 20, arbeloa is 26, i think ive made my point.
sad to see JAR go, hes been a great player in the past with a left foot like a hammer, but for the greater good we need a replacement to push on and win something, all the best to the lad, hes been a loyal servant to the club

Celtic would be a great location for Risse, he’s still quick enough to play in the spl and would be able to keep playin in the champions league with the celts as he still has something to bring to the stage at that level but not consistently as he would be required to do at liverpool. the celts have a problem at left back and he could be the man to fill it for a while, also i think John O’shea has been taking it easy for long enough and a move away from 15-20 appearences a year at united is called for if he wants to establish himself with Trapp.
Again i think celtics big stage and euro football would be ideal for him and he and mcmanus would be a very strong pairing for the bhoys
i hear a lot of good about insua from my liverpool supporting friends and i thought he would be making the step up to regular first team action next year, he’s supposed to have all the attributes to be a top talent. As well as that i’ve always thought aurelio was decent enuff.
i think Benetiz should be concentrating on attacking players, and particularly wingers if he wants to compete with the big three. His horrible pragmatism is tethering liverpool to their awfull style of play and all he seems interested in since torres became the best striker in the prem is defensive mids and the backline, actually no, wait, thats not new is it?
for gods sake you crap excuse for a manager, David silva and david villa are available, and your’e bidding for albert riera? suuuuuuuuch an unambitious bottomfeeder
