West Ham, Aston Villa and Newcastle all chase £5m assist machine: Who will win the race?

Reading full back seems destined to leave the Royals and whilst it seemed that West Ham were leading the chase for the England fullback it now appears that two other Premier League sides are in the hunt.

West Ham, Newcastle, Aston Villa and French side Nice are all keen to bid for Royals full-back Shorey, who is eager to leave the club to continue his push to become an England regular. West Ham, Newcastle and Aston Villa are all interested, too.
But Reading chief executive Nigel Howe said of the £5m rated star: “You sometimes get clubs who will fly a kite with a stupid offer, but no one will steal any of our players away.” (Daily Mirror)

Clearly being in the top tier at this stage of Shorey’s career is crucial, he doesn’t seem keen on trying to stick with his side and battle for a quick promotion. All sides mentioned could do with extra creativity from their full back positions and the 27 year old offers that in abundance, whether it’s from set pieces or deft touches helping put strikers in on goal. Who will win the race?

West Ham sell out 35000 at home every game. See how Villa and Everton would do if they had to pay our prices. They can’t even show up now and Villa get their tickets free with a pint of Brains, and Everton get ‘em doled out with the fortnighly giro. Big clubs, delusions of grandeur. Prem attendances 07-08
Aston Villa - 40,375
Everton - 36,903
West Ham United - 34,601

If you didnt spend all your money on pearly king suits you might be able to afford a ticket.

Seriously though WHU is just a badly run club buying lots of poor hasbeens and paying big wages to attract them. If maybe they attempted to try and find new talent cheaply they might improve from mid-low table year in year out.

Lets compare some of WHU recent signings to say Evertons
Lucas Neil - Lescott
Matthew Upson - Jagielka
Scott Parker - Arteta
Ljunberg - Pienaar
Dyer - Cahil

Not sure how much the WHU players cost but evertons cost less than £16m the lot and all on sub £40k wages

He’s a Romford born(near west ham training ground) west ham fan. why would he go north to the geordie footballers goldfish bowl or want to play with reo cocky or be bossed around by a sweaty sock? ultimately the decision is down to reading but if he gets a choice i think he may want to head due east.

Are the Wet Shammers so desperate that they keep suggesting that Shorey is a Wet Sham fan despite Shorey’s own confession that he supports the Arses? I think given a choice, the average footballer would choose Villa over the Sham - and I’m a Reading fan.

I’m gutted that Reading are going down - lot of time for ‘em - but I’d be very happy to see Shorey turn up at St James’s Park next season. He’s just the alternative for that LB spot that’s needed. I think it just comes down to whether he wants to stay daahhn saahhth or not. I’d love to see him in black and white…

And here’s another thought: will it come down to which move is most likely to get him that England starting spot? I suspect he knows that he’s the sort of attacking player that Keegan favours, and he’ll get plenty of encouragement to get forward and steal the limelight..

Any of you guys know where Shorey used to play before he joined reading? Was he one of the former englishmen in the arsenal academy who left because Arsene Wenger didn’t like their mastery of the french language?

I read at article about it, but don’t remember which player(s) left arsenal for reading. Steve Sidwell maybe?
