Liverpool edge nearer to £30m man: Rafa can persuade him to join!
by Mr Comfort on June 15th, 2008 81 commentsIf money was no object, then the tabloids would have you believe that £300m could be invested in new arrivals at Anfield. However, this target could apparently only need a little persuading to become a feared strike partner for El Nino!
Rafa Benitez could persuade David Villa to sign for Liverpool, according to the striker’s Spanish team-mate Carlos Marchena. (Mail on Sunday)
Liverpool is the preferred destination of Euro 2008’s four-goal sensation David Villa as the mad scramble for his services next season kicks off.
Kop boss Rafa Benitez has already tried to sign the Spain striker TWICE and the prospect of playing for a Spanish coach alongside Spain team-mate Fernando Torres has left Villa, who hit Spain’s winner against Sweden yesterday, dreaming of joining the Anfield armada. (News of the World)
David Villa’s stock has risen immeasurably after his exploits in Spain’s first two matches at Euro 2008. Clearly Valencia would be loath to sell the 26-year-old lethal finisher, but they have slapped a transfer fee of £30m on his shoulders so if he does leave the Mestalla the La Liga club will be well compensated! He is wanted man and having Fernando Torres on the books can only help the club in such a bid, and I guess then it only comes down to money and ambition. Clearly Liverpool are an ambitious club that are moving in the right direction, all they need are the funds to challenge the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester United and Chelsea. Do Liverpool fans think that such a move is even remotely possible or should Rafa concentrate on finding a cheaper option?

Torres Villa
I like the look of that!

Totally agree. How can we pay 20 million for Barry when we can get a world class striker like Villa for 30 million?
If we only sign Villa most fans will be happy. Barry is good but not world class. Villa means goals which mean victories.

i pray that there will be some news of a takeover at liverpool soon because if there isn’t we won’t have much money to spend and we’ll have to buy players like james milner. we need to buy the likes of villa, silva, quaresma, moutinho and veloso, not overrated, overpriced english players like milner, barry and downing. and what is benitez thinking. sell alonso for 14 million and buy barry for more than that? its ridiculous, barry wont add much and alonso is better

ste - June 15th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
lucas, mascherano, alonso and gerrard are all better than barry so we dont need him! plus if there is some crisis we have plessis. i personally think liverpool should keep hold of guthrie because he is just as effective as barry, and he could play from the bench whereas barry wouldnt want to do that.
reikirebel - June 15th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
AS LFC spent more then ManU last season … (LFC just over 70m – ManU just under 60m (tevez was on loan, not bought!)). Liverpool have never and are NOT now a poor relation to the likes of manU, Arsenal etc ….. no – one can match Chelsea for spending power as there owner is a money billionaire and for him its small change to throw 100m at his team … aside from Chelsea, I don’t believe there is much difference between the other when it comes to spending (I did some research and its not difficult to find the information about how much clubs have spent … go check it out!). So if money was right, Yes I would think Villa could be a possiblity for LFC … saying that depends on how much they want for him, if a bidding war starts, I’d get out quick and look elsewhere and thats not a defeatest attitude, thats just common-sense!!!! …. also depends if rafa wants to buy him, he may have other ideas, 30m could buy 2x 15m quality players and we have to consider that rafa is now playing with1 striker … so would 2x world class strikers be happy sharing the games …. I’m not sure, I would think they would both want to play every/most game if fit ……
Will we be in the market for this type of player … yes
Will we bid silly money for this type of player …. don’t think so, only Chelsea can play that game!!!!!!
All will be clear soon enough, lets sit back and enjoy the euros, first week in July should be interesting and a clear indication of rafas thoughts and where he expects the team to develop ….

this would be the ideal team and bench
if we dont sell alonso then sell guthrie

Let’s face it. With the 2 American nitwits busy trying to outdo each other and pay for their lavish expenses out of the Anfield coffers, there’s no chance of us being able to sign Villa. Also, Rafa’s only way of raising funds is ‘pawnbroking the Liverpool bronzeware’. Dream on…

Barry is a very similar player to Alonso in many ways but he has the advantage of being effectively another central defender when defending set pieces. That is something that Rafa has said he is looking to improve. Also if we are playing more attacking football we need two defensive midfielders. Alonso is probably better concentrating on attacking play. He’s not a natural defender.
Also, the premier league has only been won once with a team that didn’t have core of English players. We need our squad players to be English lads that work hard and give their all when the exceptional players aren’t available. Milner is one of those types of players.

Sell Voronin and Riise for 7m combined. That’s 31m.

It’s simple Rafa. Torres needs another person like Villa to hit 30+ goals. Surely the most lethal combination in Europe, no sorry…the world!
Don’t let this one go. DON’T LET THIS ONE GO!

we arent far away from the top just too many draws last season …scoring plenty..tight at the back..goals all over the team …six players on double figures last season…lost less games than utd..so deffo going in the right direction…a couple of world class signings villa hopefully one of them..so when we face the big guns they cant just mark torres out of the game…please rafa sign him
aj - June 15th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
reikirebel – liverpools net spend was £20 last year – Uniteds was 60 – think you have the facts mixed up.
We had to off load a whole host of players to get lads in, whom where initially bought on tick.
Thats the problem with lfc – they never build under Rafa as he doesnt have the finnances thanks to the yanks.
If the clown Parry had done his work DIC would own us now – not the cowboys. Had PArry done some work, we wouldnt be selling Alonso we would be building a squad to push the likes of United and Chelsea – you only have to look at there benches to the see the void between the two.
Villa would be awesome for us and I would love to see him come – problem is we desperatly need genuine width first as that will push Kuyt and Babel up front – not saying either is my choice – but this isnt Champ Manager, the reality is annoyingly harsh and a bitter pill to digest the yanks that own us dont have a pot to p!ss in – ’till they do – expect more mediocre at the club.
Shame, as Rafa is a great manager, had he been backed who knows what would have happend – shame he has to sell players year on year to bring in new talent!
byrneitez - June 15th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
if somehow we manage to pull off the signing of villa and barry would be great buth villa especially i think with babel and kuyt on the wings wel be fine torres and villa up front wed see a record for most goals shared between strikers and there is no way rafa will only play one up front having these two at his disposal

ste - June 15th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
we dont really need villa. id rather buy versatile attacking players like david silva. i like the current formation and it works, with only one striker. i also think a 4-3-3 could work with the babel, silva and torres as the front three, with the likes of kuyt as backup. mascherano and lucas holding with gerrard more attacking in the midfield three. the back four is simple.
handrit - June 15th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
villa is the man, barry is not good enough- he is worth about 12 million & villa a 30 million is good for him…….
billy the bat - June 15th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
If this occurs it would be amazing and i see no reason why it shouldn’t, Villa pure and simply is CLASS. i am prob the one of a small number of liverpool fans that believe that Barry in, and Alonso out is actually a good thing. Alonso has been great but i just think its time for him to move on and i feel the italian league would really suit him, Barry is more defensive but can also create and score goals, (although obviously not as good a passer as Alonso), he’s also more versatile being able to play on the right. He will be a great buy. Villa, Barry, degen, dosena (a bit more cover in defence), one young back up goal keeper, and one good winger, (either Mancini, Silva, Joaquin, Young, Quresma, mold), and Milner, (as i have been watching his career at leeds, Newcastle, Villa and believe he has great great potential and he’s only 22).i really do believe we can compete next year. The gaps getting closer. Arsenal just aren’t what they used to be, with the fans living in the past, and becoming a feeder team, (i love Wenger but he needs to work in the academy)…Chelsea will just buy over the odds on all these over hyped, big headed, primo donna’s…Man U are our only main competition and if we buy those players i really believe we can overcome them, or at least have a starting 11 equal to there’s. (Ronaldo aside, although he may have left by then).
We have some fantastic talent at liverpool. Reina, (who only can’t get a game at spain because Iker is just so so so so good), Sktrl, (who i had never heard of before but is turning out to be a bargain, and in the same mould as Vidic), Agger, (who i think is a amazing defensive and offensive player, that we really missed last season), Carra, (no matter what you think he has been a rock for liverpool), Gerrard, Torres, Babel, (saw glimses of the future Henry and at only 21??? ), Masch, (i believe will be one of the best defensive midfielders in years to come), Leiva, (before coming to liverpool was supposed to be one of the hotest prospects from brasil), Nemeth, (this lad is Owen, and i hope will be brought in to the full squad), Insua, (lot of talent and impressed with his displays).
So the future is not that bad… we KNOW that the league championship will come home.
IN RAFA WE TRUST

billy the bat - June 15th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
STE the only reason i don’t agree is that, that puts the assumption on Torres not being injured. i would prefer Silva over Villa but we do need another consistent striker. Kuyt will never get us 20 goals a season, voronin, we’ll be lucky to get 3. and Crouch will be leaving. i do wish we had kept Pongolle as i do believe he could have come good and would have been great back up.
We do need another stiker to get us some consistent goals or in some teams case have a winger that will score 40+ goals, then it wouldn’t matter how underperforming your strikers were.

as we clearly have a chance to get villa (if we have the money to spend), we should take it. it’s not often that kind of players are availiable, and not often they talk about our club like a favoured destination in the media. anyways, if it’s not happening with villa we should go for silva or arshavin who will be playing in russia’s last game after being banned for they’re first two games. look out for him…
this is the quality we need.

aj why so gloomy.. we have talent, its not always about buying the most expensive players out there. Rafa has done a great job, do you remember the years before… now that was bad… the americans will go but we need to get behind Rafa for now. i always hear that all these fans are fed up with Rafa not buying quality players…
Plain and simple Rafa buys players that want to play for LIVERPOOL. You think Torres couldn’t have got more money at chelsea?, you think Gerrard couldn’t have left for inter?.. Do we really want players who only go for the money… Money doesn’t make a team if it did Chelsea would have won everything… they didn’t….Wenger built a team of winners with a shoe string budget.
Liverpool has always been a team with heart, and passion. Just look at Anelka when he missed that penalty he didn’t even seem that bothered. Reina, Carra, Kuyt, Masch, Gerrard, Torres, Agger these guys are pure passion. I would prefer a player that comes to liverpool because he understands the history and wants to work his ass off for us. Look at Ronaldo, the way he’s treated United…. why doesn’t he just come out and say I DON’T WANT TO LEAVE. look at Torres, with Chelsea sniffing around, he has said I WANT TO STAY. thats the difference between our team and others.

Do we buy Villa and chick the idea of 4-2-3-1 out the windows and go 4-4-2, or 4-3-3?
a three across the middle of Barry – Gerrard – Mash
With Babel – Torres – Villa up front would have several teams kacking their pants.
I think having those three up front with the freedom to take the wing or the centre and keep rotating would unwind any defence.
maxta - June 15th, 2008 at 11:57 pm
Simple-buy Villa. This will change the defensive mentality of lets score 1 goal andf protect the lead(which so often ends in a draw or a loss).Personally any win is great but positive football is a much more exciting spectacle and the destructive combination of Villa and Torres up front is a proven sensation. Code Nike-JUST DO IT!!!!!!

does anyone remember the last euro sensation. if only someone offered us 30million for Baros . . .
Villa price should not be deturmined by euro run.
JoeRao - June 16th, 2008 at 2:10 am
Based on last season, our team needs repairs in 3 areas, upfront without Torres or away matches, wings and defence. Our defence would not have been so bad if Agger was available the whole season and Riise was half as good as he was supposed to be. I believe Skrtel was a fantastic signing and when Agger is back next season, defence can be top class again with Hyppia as back up. Finnan is past his prime n it will be more of a case of passion n positioning. Thats the reason behind getting Degen (free, so not that bad). Carra will be playing more on the right the coming season. Aurelio and Arbeloa are good left backs n with the imminent signing of Dossena, that area is decent enough already. So, I strongly believe our defence is complete for a very long term as we have very decent covers in Insua and Hobbs. I seriously don’t think we will be signing any more defenders for the next 2 seasons atleast.
Our midfield is definately our strongest, but the lack of creativity and width is he main concern. Barry will b played on the left with Gerrard and Masch in the centre. Based on the performan in the final third of last season as well as in Euro, I believe Kuyt has found his ’suitable’ area in this team and I would not bother getting a main player for the right side of the midfield. For all the creativity that we lack, we still need a horse to run n grab the ball from the opposition n Kuyt gives us just that. Benny onion and Babel can be good back ups as well. If we are still having problems on the right this coming season, we can cover that in the Jan window. As for the strikers, Torres is definately the most realiable weapon we have. Babbel is more of a super sub and is more than capable to be introduced in the 60th minute onwards. However, I’m still having my doubts for a full match. I still think that he needs another season to get used to the english game. Vorronin n Crouch are the only remaining strikers n with their departure, we would need some solid replacement. So, with the Euro results in mind, Villa would be a fantastic signing. And if rumours are to be believed, we can also get Henry as back up. All this addition doesn’t guarantee success, but definately it will make our team very much stronger. My point of view on last season is this: If we turned the results against Manure the other way round, we will be the Champs with 1 point more than them.
Gerry - June 16th, 2008 at 2:44 am
If Rafa has money to buy Barry, then after selling the extra players, we can get 30m so we can afford David Villa.
By the way, all Davids seem to be good players, e.g. Silva, Bentley and Villa. LOL.
taffy - June 16th, 2008 at 2:46 am
What we currently have and where we’re short (presuming alonso, crouch, pennant, voronin and riise go, and that carson stays):
GK – reina/carson
RB – degen/arbeloa/(carra)
CB – carra/agger/skrtel/hyypia (2 players)
LB – dossena/insua/aurelio
DM – masch/ANOTHER/plessis (2 players)
AM – stevie/lucas/benny-o
AR – ANOTHER/kuyt
AL – babel/ANOTHER
SC – torres/ANOTHER
If you assume that babel can play right side attack, plus we could use benny-o there anyway, i’d say its fair that we only need a left-sided attacker, plus a striker, plus that extra midfielder.
Bearing in mind that our defense is now pretty much sorted (and if you look at the ages, they will be for a very long time to come), then if we get barry, a winger and villa, i think we’re nearly there.
On top of this, we can expect the likes of nemeth, san jose, spearing and even pacheco to appear more and more from the bench.
As ever, though, our net spend will not be anywhere near that of the chelski and utd. If we spend £50-55M on the three players we need, we’ll still be selling £30-35M worth of players. I think 5 players leaving and 3 coming in is no bad thing, either. The squad needs more quality and less quantity in order to allow those youngsters to get a chance.

Diego Lopez(or Kameni)
Carragher Naldo Mertesacker Agger
Babel Gerrard Mascherano Barry(Silva)
Torres Villa (Roman Pavlochenko)
The subs: Skrtel, Kuyt, Crouch, Quaresma
I have not seen Dossena and Degen playing yet so I can not judge about them. I think if Rafa gives Crouch enough games to play he will be one of the best in the world. The above-mentioned team arrangement I think will concede less 10 goals in a season.

Rafa might already consider buying David Villa; I have a hunch that the Spanish players from Liverpool are already influencing him to join Liverpool for the title challenge and no where else. Perhaps Rafa has already prepared a bid for Villa & he has assigned Torres, Alonso & Reina to speak to Villa about the exciting times ahead at the Kop.
See Villa’s reaction towards the Liverpool players and how well Torres & Villa click. How Alonso & then Reina spent time & effort persuading the ref to give Villa the match ball. Perhaps Fabregas knows this, and that is why he is concerned that having Villa in Liverpool would mean trouble for Arsenal, the Mancs & Chelsea after Villa’s display at Euros, and thus trying to persuade Arsene Wenger to make a bid too.
Think about it, it all makes sense….

The Electric New Paper :
Villa to Arsenal: Come and get me
SPANISH international David Villa has made it clear he’s ready and willing to leave Valencia for England this summer.
18 April 2008
SPANISH international David Villa has made it clear he’s ready and willing to leave Valencia for England this summer.
Chelsea are said to be interested, but the striker really wants to join Arsenal or, failing that, Liverpool.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has indicated he is prepared to spend big on an experienced player, but it is in defence that Arsenal have shown themselves to be most frail.
The 26-year-old striker is thought to be high on Chelsea manager Avram Grant’s wishlist, with a bid of around £30 million ($80m) being planned and the UK press reporting that an approach by the Blues has already been made.
Villa has hit 63 goals for Valencia over the past three seasons and has been one of the few Valencia players to perform consistently this year.
But while he is keen to try his luck in the Premier League, the striker has admitted it’s Chelsea’s London rivals Arsenal he’d really like to join.
‘I watch the Premier League a lot and the team I’m most attracted to is definitely Arsenal,’ said Villa.
‘Their brilliant one- and two-touch football and the whole style of rapid counter-attack which dominates the top level of the Premier League now is the one which suits my game best of all.
‘I think I’m made to succeed in England but of course it’s one thing saying it and quite another getting there and then doing it. The Valencia president always told me he wouldn’t sell me until summer 2008,’ Villa added.
‘If an offer comes in I’m hungry to test myself in England.’
The Spanish striker is said to have a buy-out clause of 100 million euros ($215.5m) which may be way beyond the modest budget of Arsenal, who have spent only £18.1 million since 2004.
CONTRAST
This is in stark contrast to the expenditures of Chelsea, who have spent £177.9m, Liverpool (£100.5m) and Manchester United (£75.3m).
The striker said that if it were to prove impossible to join Arsenal this summer then his next preference would be Liverpool, where he could link up with international team mate Fernando Torres.
‘It’s great playing alongside Fernando. We understand each other totally and we get on brilliantly off the park.’

Now I remember reading somewhere that Villa confirms that ambition and passion is more important than money in football. Which means a Chelsea is most probably not in his agenda. Arsenal, he might consider, but that would be dependent of Adebayor leaving elsewhere, thus leaving a space for Villa to step in.
But I like Villa’s candour with Torres, seems like he really enjoys playing with El Nino. Signs are good.

This is what we should do:
We have £20M in our transferbudget. We get £10M for Crouch.
We use this money on Villa.
Then we take the £14M we should get for Alonso and use this income on Barry. If they want moore. Then don’t bother.
We could then use the money we get for Alonso to buy us a class winger. We need two but lets get one this year since we don’t have a lot of money.
We could also sell Voronin and Carson and use this money to buy an secound striker a cheeper one. £12M.
Then we would have double cover on most places. Babel is alsaw good as a forwarder. Benayouin is not great but he would do as second choice in one of the wing posistions.
We would have this team:
*indicates hopefully bought.
Reina,Itjande
Finnen,Arbeloa
Hyypia,Skrtl(Arbeloa)
Agger,Carragher(Arbeloa)
Aurelio,Insua(Arbeloa)
Shaun Wright Phillips*,Pennant,(Benayouin),(Kuyt)
Gerrard,Barry*
Luca,Mascherano
Babel,Benayouin
Torres,Kuyt
Villa,*Bentley (Babel)

I think that we need a world class striker and winger, not midfielder. Because we got fantastic Gerrard Mascherano and Alonso. Bring in a striker and winger to play with Torres and Babel!
Yordi - June 16th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
Take a look at Huntelaar & van der Vaart,, they are young stars van der vaart is a reallygood playmaker and Huntelaar is ready higher step. RAfa Benitez maybe think of cooparation with Ajax Amsterdam, look what players they have or had: Babel Sneijder Van der VAart Van der Sar Heitinga are all from Ajax,, And now there are coming new talents.. with new coach Van Basten they will win international prizes again.!!

Mohammed Hossain - June 16th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Ya all listen up! I really wanted to keep my mouth shut but here it comes. Villa, Quaresma, Barry, Deggen, Dossena, Lahm were on the list given to someone to be printed on the back of liverpool’s shirts.

we must get villa, why spend £20m on barry who is worth £10m and is not an outstanding player when we can get villa for £25-£30 who is a worldclass striker
Mohammed Hossain - June 17th, 2008 at 9:53 am
Abdul I know its hard to believe but as fans we can only be optimistic and keep hoping that the players we sign will fit in with the current setup of liverpool and implement the manager’s strategy or tactics by being spot on. The difference between midocre and world class players is the level of understanding and chemistry a player can build or adapt to for instance, the way torres has done so. Again, rumours are meant to be ruours and purely rumours not based on facts or any iota of truth but people’s hope, fantasy, dream team, experience, and a lot more but to name a few. However, I believe because Benitez has been so quiet over the the last few weeks (note: not even making any comments or remarks about the Spanish games against Sweden or Russia gives away so much) the deal for Villa is probably already done except for the signature the dotted lines are vying for. If this wasn’t the case Mr Benitez would have been using some of his shrewd negotiating skills through media to make his intent for signing villa known to Valencia. It’s all happening behind the scenes and I for one believe that Barry is just being used to provide a cover for all the other transfer targets. If you track back from day one when Benitez made a remark that got Martin O’Neil wounded up he had already set out his stall for the transfer market even though he still wants Barry who is not a second to none option. We’ve signed 2 full backs in Degen and Dossena and now he can solely conentrate on the wings as well as a striking partner for Torres. Or maybe even to rotate Torres should Villa join us. If he did it would be a great signing. All in all, I agree believe in what you only see. Now if the guy who says has contact with the guy that’s seen the list and I’m very tempted to believe him as I cannot recall a time when Liverpool ever did make such big signings as other managers came and went i.e. Houlier, Evans, etc.

If we get villa, well then revert to a 4-1-3-2, with
Left Right
Dossena- Agger- Carragher- Degen
Mascherano
Babel Gerrard Kuyt
Torres Villa
mike - June 17th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
We need to buy either Bridge or Dossena for left back, Silva not Quaresma, Barry and Villa.
Next seasons 11
Reina
Carra Skrtel Agger Dossena/Bridge
Babel Gerrard Mascherano Silva/Barry
Villa Torres
Ben - June 17th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
