Liverpool star in £3m exit: Good player with a bright future!
by Mr Comfort on July 11th, 2008As Rafa looks to trim down his squad with an eye to generating funds for future purchases, one midfielder is set to join Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle United.
Liverpool have agreed a fee with Newcastle for the transfer of Danny Guthrie, according to the Reds website.
The 21-year-old former academy player, who spent last season on loan at Bolton, is now set to travel to St James’ Park to discuss personal terms.
“We have agreed a transfer fee with Newcastle,” a Liverpool spokesman told the club website.
The central midfielder was a hit at Bolton and scored on his debut against Fulham in the Carling Cup. (BBC Sport)
£3m rated Guthrie is a very useful player who was one of the few quality performers at the Reebok as Bolton struggled for great swathes of the season. The youngster is a player who I feel will manage to move onwards with his career and whilst it’s true he would have found it hard to displace those ahead of him in the queue at Anfield he has all the characteristics and attributes to suggest he has a bright future and St James’ Park may be a good place for him to mature. Do Liverpool fans think they should have held on to Guthrie and will his departure lead to James Milner moving to Merseyside?

Good player but Jay Spearing is better and two years younger and he’s still in the reserves.

For once I agree. He has a good future, but wouldn’t get in the Liverpool side regularly enough.
Good move for him, but I hope Milner doesn’t come the other way. He’s no better than Pennant, and we want rid of him!

did rafa manage to get 3mils for guthrie?the man knows bargaining!good sell.
(hope he gets even more with itandje and pennant, then we can move for a quality left winger, that’s all we need)

He was the only thing close to quality in the bolton side last year. Good move for him, hope it works out well. Surely he can replace the dinosaurs newcastle had in the middle of the park last year like nicky butt??

Good business that £3m for a reserve, we can buy him back for £10 in 3 years.
Lemitris - July 12th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
in 3 yrs masch will be 26 and lucas 24(and plessis 22) you really think we’ll need guthrie?(not to mention spearing and even younger lads)

While hoping (actually praying!) that we get Barry, Keane & Silva as our next three players – I’ve recently been looking at possible formations for next season.
If we are fortunate enough to get these three, then it struck me that if we were to play (in my opinion) all of our highest quality players at once, how could it work, who would have to be left out and what possible formation would allow as many of these top class guys to play at the same time?
I took these 11 as what I’d consider our highest quality or UEFA Champions or Premier League winning level players:
Reina, Carra, Skrtel, Agger, Masch, Barry, Gerrard, Silva, Babel, Keane & Torres.
Of course, I’m hoping Degen & Dossena prove to be at close to the same level as the above mentioned, because that would make picking a standard back 4 much more easy. Alonso may end up staying, but I’ve left him out for now, however, when I put those 11 into their most effective positions on the pitch, it quickly became obvious that the 1 formation that would allow us to get all our very best players on the field at once, is a 3-3-2-2!
Now I know that sounds daft and it did to me at first, too, but when I looked closely at it, I started to think that it could work extremely well providing Barry & Masch were prepared to drop back into fullback positions when we were faced with counter-attacks or periods of opposition possession.
Just think about it. Rafa has now assembled (especially if those three targets come in) an extremely flexible & intelligent squad. Agger could be an extremely adept left-back in defence, and we all know that Carra could perform the same job on the right. Although both Barry & Masch are unproven in fullback roles, I’d bet my bottom dollar that Barry could do a very tidy leftback job, whereas Masch, if he played there all the time, would be a phenomenal rightback. One is naturally left-footed, the other right. In addition, with Stevie playing an attacking midfield position, he can still drop back into a more othordox central midfield role - and we know he’s amongst the very best in the world in that position – again, should we be driven back.
Torres & Keane could be a great front two – or Robbie could drop off and be the ‘Kenny Daglish’ to Fernando’s ‘Ian Rush’. Also, Silva, Gerrard & Babel can each play very effectively on the right, the left or in an attacking central midfield role – and I’d expect all 3, if they were to ever play together, to switch continuously and be an absolute nightmare for opposition defences.
Rafa is always stating how the best teams have the intelligence to be able to change formations DURING games, reacting to the ebb & flow of matches, both at home & in Europe. Look at how this ‘dream formation’:
torres-keane
babel -silva
barry-gerrard -masch
agger-skrtel-carra
reina
….could change to a:
torres
babel-keane-silva
barry-gerrard
agger-skrtel-carra-masch
reina
….or:
torres
babel-keane-silva
gerrard-masch
barry-agger-skrtel-carra
reina
….or:
torres-keane
babel- gerrard-masch-silva
barry-agger-skrtel-carra
reina
….or:
torres-keane
babel-barry-gerrard -silva
agger-skrtel-carra-masch
reina
….or:
torres
babel-keane-silva
gerrard
masch-barry
agger-skrtel-carra
reina
you get my drift………
with subs/squad players like degen, dossena, hyypia, aurelio, finnan, arbeloa, alonso (?),benayoun, kuyt, as well as young potential like lucas, plessis, nemeth, el zhar, pacheco, insua, plus others, then things look very interesting for next season!
